This essay debuted as a talk at FWB Fest in Idyllwild, California, 2022. I've rearranged and expanded the material for the essay version. It is 2018 and I am on a flight to San Francisco. I am seated next to a harried woman who pays fifty dollars for WiFi and rattles out Slack messages.
Stephen King 1971: What is a brand?
STEPHEN KING: 1931 - 2006 Stephen King was born on 25 February 1931. I first met him when he was fourteen and I was a bit older - a ratio that never changed. Later, we knew each other at Oxford, from where he graduated with a good degree in Greats (philosophy and ancient history).
